Pinpoint citation
A citation that directs the reader to the exact paragraph or page of a decision being relied on, e.g. 2014 SCC 7 at para 28.
A pinpoint citation (or pinpoint reference) identifies the precise paragraph or page of a source that supports a stated proposition. For modern Canadian cases, pinpoints cite numbered paragraphs, for example 'Hryniak v. Mauldin, 2014 SCC 7 at para 28'; older decisions without paragraph numbers are pinpointed to page numbers of a printed reporter.
Pinpoint citations are expected in factums and legal memoranda because they let the court verify a proposition instantly rather than hunting through lengthy reasons. Since Canadian courts began numbering paragraphs in their judgments, paragraph pinpoints have become the standard under the McGill Guide, and they remain stable across every version of a decision regardless of publisher.
